The Desert Winds Freedom Band is always looking for new members. You don’t have to be a professional musician to play in our band. We have members with wide ranging musical abilities, and everyone works hard to make the band sound good. People of all ages and all band instruments are welcome. You need to supply your own instrument (except percussion), you must read music, and you have to attend rehearsals regularly. Even if you’re not sure the band is for you, come give us a try!
The Band plans to start rehearsals for our 21st Season on September 8th at the Jewish Community Center located at 332 W. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA. Besides the Symphonic Band, there are opportunities to play in the Bands smaller ensembles. Membership dues this year are $90. New members are provided with a 90-day dues free period.
If you would like to learn more about the band, or if you have interest in joining us, please complete the linked form below and we will contact you promptly.

When I was 8 years old my Dad gave me a trumpet and that event sent me on the path of many years of music. As a Canadian snowbird I was thrilled when I was welcomed to be a part of the Desert Winds Freedom Band. The opportunity to perform with such a talented group of musicians from all walks of life has been a highlight for me.

LEWISI am a new resident to California from the mid-west. I believe there is no better way to get out meet new people and make new friends than by joining a community band. After being introduced to Artistic Director Dean, he welcomed me to the desert and wished me luck on job searching and told me whatever I do keep Thursday evenings free for rehearsals! I look forward to this weekly musical outlet as it keeps my chops up and it’s a great mental mid-week boost.

LARRYWhen I was six years old in Ohio I fell in love with the band at the Pemberville Parade and immediately bought my first pair of drumsticks. Fifty years later I discovered Desert Winds and I knew I was home. When I rehearse and perform with band members at this level of musicianship the joy is palpable. I’m loving every minute — and from where I stand on stage, I see the audiences are too.

BETSYWhen I moved to the desert I searched for a French horn teacher. After reading an article in the newspaper about Desert Winds Freedom Band I contacted the director Dean and went to the band’s next concert. Dean introduced me to Jillian who became my horn instructor. The next season I joined the band and have met a lot of wonderful people, played some challenging music and made good some good friends.

MANNYI moved to the desert about two years ago from San Diego. I did a Google search for ‘community symphonies’ and the Desert Winds Freedom Band ranked on the first page. I called to inquire about auditions and the band President called back and said there are no auditions….just be at rehearsal on Thursday! And now, here I am loving every single minute of it!

I was introduced to Dean McDowell at an event where he was being honored with other community leaders for his work with the band and the arts. I had NO idea there even was a concert band in the desert. He told me there was a donated clarinet available to play…then I heard the band! Mind blow. No brainer — I joined! I love DWFB and how it nurtures my creative being.
